Topic: The Middle Place -- How to be a Well-balanced Pianist

Teresa Dybvig is director and piano instructor at The Balanced Pianist, which presents a variety of short, intensive programs for small groups of pianist, high school age and above, amateur and professional.

Ms Dybvig played the piano from a young age, performing her first  full-length solo recital at age 13. She has performed as a soloist and chamber musician throughout the US, in Europe and in the Mid-East.

Ms. Dybvig hold a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Piano Performance from Yale University, and a Master's degree in Piano Performance from Indiana University. Numerous Prizes and scholarships supported her education and performance. Her most influential major teachers include Peter  Frankl, Boris Berman and James Tocco. While she was working on here degree from Yale, she began studying Dorothy Taubman's approach to piano technique with Edna Golandsky in Manhattan, which she continued for many years.

Teresa teaches privately and often presents lectures and master classes on both the interpretive and technical aspects of playing the piano. She is active in research to uncover music by women to add to the mainstream repertoire. Her most recent contribution is an article about contemporary music by Turkish women for Women Composers: "Music through the Ages", a multi-volume anthology of music by women.

Speaker :  Dr. Judith Alstadter
Topic: How to Practice Effectively

In this presentation Judith will discuss and demonstrate effective practice methods relating to technique, interpretation, rhythm, dynamics and style, as will as physical and mental preparation. The techniques and principles can be used successfully by students, teachers  and professionals.

The works that will be covered are Bach Two-part Invention #8 in F Major; Beethoven " Moonlight" Sonata; Chopin Waltz in C# minor; Gershwin Prelude #1 and Joplin " Maple Leaf Rag".

Dr. Judith Alstadter is a concert pianist , music educator, lecturer and recording artist. She has concertized in the United States, Europe and the Caribbean, including concerts at Alice Tully Hall and Carnegie Recital Hall.

Born in New York, she is a graduate of the Juilliard School and received here doctoral degree from Yale University School of Music. She also studied in France.

An official Steinway Artist, she was honored by the French government for her contributions to French music in America with the Medal of Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters.

A well-known educator, Dr. Alstadter has been affiliated with several institutions, including Pace University and Five Towns College in New York and Eckerd College in Florida.

She has appeared throughout Long Island in concerts and lectures at libraries, museums and colleges. She was  the founder and director of the popular Minewaska Chamber Music Society. Judith Alstadter currently divides her time between Florida and New York.

Speaker :  Patricia Cestaro
Topic: "Journey"

This presentation follows a group of piano students over a period of a year. It focuses on how learning style affects the formulation of an individualized learning plan.

Patricia Cestaro teaches piano in Northport. She is a Graduate of Long Island University. She has taught a wide variety of students over the last 30 years. Many of these students have learning difficulties. She has several students concerts each year in which all her students participate.

Patricia is the chairperson for Western Suffolk of the American College of Musicians Guild auditions. She is the co-founder of the local piano teachers group, as well as a member of Suffolk Piano Teachers Forum and Association of Piano Teachers of Long Island.

Mrs. Cestaro's  goal is to help others learn the joy in teaching piano to special needs children. She has run workshops for piano teachers and high school students.
